We were on a quest to locate an automatic transmission that would perform well with
our supercharged Ford. With one phone call to
TCI  Automotive it looked as if we
had struck pay dirt. Their 35+ years of experience helped to fill our tall order. Our
Quest had us seeking a dyno proven transmission that could deliver the crisp
response we expected from our projected 425 HP. We also wanted to hold on to
some of our drive-ability by way of an overdrive for those longer highway journeys.  I
guess you could say we wanted our cake and to eat it too! To dial in on the right
choice we would need to first consider the car's weight, engine configuration, hp
rating, gear ratio, tire size and desired performance characteristics. With the help of
the TCI tech department, we opted for one of their "Street Fighter" series AOD 4
speed / overdrive transmissions with an optional deep pan for some extra cooling.
We added a "Street Fighter" torque converter and one of their SFI Flexplates to
compete our package and were in business.
After setting our new transmission in the chassis we needed a way to shift our rod
into gear. There are many different automatic shifters available today but we opted
for one made by
Lokar Performance.  What makes this shifter stand apart from
the rest is their very simple low profile mechanism and fully adjustable direct mount
bracket system. This system allowed us a larger window of adjustability when it
came time for the final placement and made it very helpful when fitting to a small
space. Best of all, Lokar products come with a lifetime warranty which is proof
positive that you are buying a quality product.
Out back we were set up to run a shortened Ford 9" but we still had some work to
do on our rotating assembly. We considered rebuilding the cast 3rd member that
came with our rear end and then decided it was time to "kick it up a notch". We
found an aluminum 3rd member from
Winters Performance that we loaded up with
a new ring & pinion, billet aluminum yoke and Auburn Pro series Limited slip
differential.
Auburn Gear is well respected in the performance differential world.
What makes their differential so effective is it's ability to deliver more traction with
lightning-fast response to changing load conditions. The other reason we really like
this unit is its ability to be rebuilt instead of replaced Auburn Gear sells a service kit
when any worn parts need replacing.
