4 Things To Do In A Plumbing Emergency

Plumbing emergencies are something that can arise at any time, and it can be scary. This is especially true if you have a major leak that can potentially cause water damage to other areas of your home. In order to avoid a larger disaster, here are four things you should do in a plumbing emergency:

  1. Turn Off the Water: The first thing you want to do is turn off main water valve to your home, which is located outside of your home. You will want to locate this before any plumbing emergencies arise so you immediately know where to go. However, you can simply shut off the water to one appliance if only that appliance is the problem. You should do this before you call a plumber to prevent water damage as soon as possible.
  2. Call a Plumber: Once the water is shut off, you can call a plumber. You should know who to call as soon as a plumbing emergency arises because you don't want to be stuck having to search through the hundreds of plumbers in your area before finding the right one. This should be done before you have plumbing issues since it will give you more time and you won't be stressed about getting someone to your home right away.
  3. Check for Leaks: Even with the water shut off, there is still water stuck in the pipes that could be slowly leaking. While waiting for the plumber to arrive, it's best to plug up these leaks to prevent them from causing a larger issue. The best thing to do is to always having plumbing tape handy in your home since you can use this to wrap around any pipes that might be leaking. If not, you can always use buckets and towels to help with leaks as well.
  4. Turn on Hose: Any garden hoses that you have outside should be turned on until there is no more water running from them. This will take out any water that is left sitting in the pipes that connect to your home. Just be sure that you turn the all hoses off afterwards so it doesn't start flowing with water once you turn the main water valve to your home back on.

When you do these four things in a plumbing emergency, you can be sure that you avoid major damages in the future, which will save you money, time, and stress.
